Biography
Vsevolod Andreevich Filippov (1893 – 1976) was born in Moscow and spent almost all his life there. After he had finished school he entered the studio of Peter Ivanovich Kelin. In 1914 Filippov began to study in The Moscow School of Art, Sculpture and Architecture. A.M. Vasnetsov and A.E. Arkhipov became his teachers. Since the early days of his studying at the School the young painter worked at landscape, composition, thoroughly studied Russian’s history. Among his first works were water-colours devoted to Pushkin’s “The Golden Cockerel” and a picture “The Market in an ancient Russian Town” which was awarded Tretiakov’s Prize in 1917. The painter was carried away by the historical theme and as a result of that there is a great amount of sketches made from ancient manuscripts. Filippov also studied books on Russian history, maps of ancient towns. At about that time the painter was struck by an idea of creating an album “The Ancient Russian Architecture”, but he was able to bring it to life only many years later.
In 1918 after the October Revolution The School of Art, Sculpture and Architecture was reorganized into the State Free Studios of Art and Technics – VHUTEMAS. Continuing to work with Arkhipov Filippov entered a new organized etching studio headed by Nivinsky and then Faliev. Faliev was the third person (besides Vasnetsov and Arkhipov) to whom Vsevolod Andreevich owed his education.
From the beginning of the 20-ies Filippov began working systematically in polygraphy. Many various editions for a large amount of readers appeared in those years. Filippov did typing for such magazines as “The Electricity”, “The Whole World’s Illustration”, “The Worker”, “I Want to Know Everything” and “The Screen”. For “Murzilka” which appeared in 1925 the painter designed pages, painted many illustrations.
Even working in many editions Vsevolod Andreevich didn’t give up painting from life. He exhibited his small sketches in the Moscow Studio of Art, on the exhibitions of “The Society of Painters of the Moscow School”, on the exhibitions of AHRR of which he became a member in 1924. Later on the landscape works of Filippov were exhibited on different exhibitions. His first individual exhibition took place in 1956, the second – in 1974.
For many years V.A. Filippov remained a member of the Council of Painters. Vsevolod Andreevich helped young painters, he prepared them for entering the Council of Painters and many of his apprentices became members of the Council of Painters.
