Biography

Inge Behrens was born in Bremen, Germany. At an early age she showed great promise as an artist. She received a classical European education followed by a dress and tailoring apprenticeship, earning a degree in fashion design. At the end of 1963 she became a fashion designer with "Martina Modelle" a highly reputable fashion house in Hamburg, Germany.

In June of 1964 Inge Behrens moved to America where she continued her fashion design education with the fashion Institute of New York, and there she was recruited by Simplicity Pattern.

In 1965 she married, moved to San Francisco and started a family. Once her children started school in the suburbs of the east bay area she resumed her passion for painting. She starting volunteering at a number of art galleries as well as teaching art technique and sewing for enrichment to elementary students. She also began designing manuals and catalogs for various fund-raisers.

In 1974 Inge attended Diablo Valley College, where she studied business and art. During this time she also joined the art gallery co-op "Palette of Art" in Walnut Creek, where she held a one-person art show. Two years later she and her husband established an automotive repair shop and Inge took on the responsibilities of administration and P.R., while retaining her involvement in the art communities.

In 1984 she expanded her artistic scope under her own business name of "Calligraphy Creations", designing business logos, creating certificates of recognition for various national companies as well as design custom invitations, and pen personal works of art on request. Additionally she continued to maintain an active membership in the local arts by participating regularly in various juried art shows.

Inge joined the "calligraphers' Forum" in 1986 and became the organization's president for two consecutive years in 1990 and 1991. While an active member she participated in the design and contents of three books; "A Dash of This and A Stroke of That", "Family and Friends", and "Special Dates". Additionally she published "75th Diamond Jubilee of Walnut Creek", a visual history of the city then and now, which received official recognition and was displayed throughout the city.

She participated in the 1986 San Francisco Trade Fair and the New York "Art expo", displaying her work among well-known artists.

Throughout her life she has traveled extensively. As a teen she visited countries in Europe, including France, Strasbourg, and Italy. Later as an adult, she expanded her travels throughout North America, including Hawaii, South America; Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, Brazil, and the Caribbean. Traveling in the Mediterranean she has explored; Greece, Egypt and Turkey, and parts of Indonesia; Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Java and Bali.

The visual experiences of these travels have found their way into her works of art. She has been able to capture the romantic feel of medieval castles, the tranquility of the tropics, and the calm quiet siesta of an old narrow Greek passage at mid-afternoon.

Although her strength and main interest lies in drawing and painting, she has a broad knowledge of a variety of artistic mediums. She has explored and has a working understanding of the techniques of linoleum cutting, wood cuts, and zinc copper plate etchings and stained glass.

To date she has opened her own art studio, "Inge Behrens – Fine Arts Studio".
