I find that I always need time to observe before I begin to paint, even when I think I know exactly what I want to do. I travel extensively to find compelling places, people, and things to paint. When I start a new piece, I am motivated by a physical location, an individual, or an image in my head; but to move forward I need to make a unique connection and then recreate it from my unique perspective. I enjoy surfing. And from my experience I am trained to observe waves. I become transfixed watching waves emerge, feeling their power, translucence, and individual character of each one. I go back to this subject often, because I feel that my paintings convey the personality of each wave I select. This search for the uniqueness of whatever it is that compels me to paint is at the core of why I paint and what I paint, and propels me to make more.
