The 775th birthday of the town of Yuryevets- on - the Volga
One of the most beautiful cities on the Volga river - Yuryevets-on-the Volga - is marking its 775th birthday this year. The town was a starting point for soldiers of the 16th century Cossack chief Yermak sent by Ivan the Terrible to conquer Siberia. Here too Russian saints Makarii Unzhensky and Tikhon Lukhovskoy began their church services. Born here were Russia's famous architects - the Vesnin brothers, the prominent film director Andrei Tarkovksy and the author of fairy tale movies Alexander Rou. The town once had a museum which opened in 1925 at a local school. The authorities gave the museum the premises of a church and then of another church and finally closed it down altogether. Now it has reopened in the former mansion of merchant Flyagin. The museum has several exhibition halls, a library and even a small hotel. Its windows have a wonderful view of the Volga. The first visitor of the newly-opened museum has become great-granddaughter of Alexander Flyagin, the merchant and City Mayor who donated his personal funds to build the mansion, the local maternity clinic and the hospital. |
