Description
Torzhok,

city, Tver oblast (province), western Russia, on the Tvertsa River, 37 miles (60 km) west of Tver. The first recorded mention of Torzhok dates from 1139. But the first settlements appeared in the 10-th century. The old name of this town was the Novy Torg what means ‘the new market place’. In the year of 1238 having resisted for 15 days against the Tatars Torzhok saved the Veliky Novgorod town. After the rade of the tatars Torzhok was almost totally destroyed. In its best times Torzhok even had its own money named ‘denga novotorzhskaya’. (the Russian word ‘denga’ stands for the English word ‘money’).

In the 14th century it became the centre of a small rural district in the Novgorod Feudal Republic, on the trade route between Novgorod and the principality of Suzdal. In 1478 the Muscovite state incorporated Torzhok. During a military campaign of Wladyslaw IV Vasa (lived 1595-1648), the Polish monarch, Poles largely destroyed the town. In the 18th century it successively became part of Izhora Land (Russian territory after a war with Sweden in 1702-03), the province of Novgorod, and the Viceregency of Tver.

The name of Torzhok always associates with Alexander Pushkin – famous Russain and world poet – who visited this town more than 30 times on his way from Moscow to St.Peterburg and backwards. In our days you can find the museum of Alexander Pushkin and his monument in this town. Near Torzhok there is a country church-yard called Prutnya. Anna Kern was buried near this church-yard. She was a women to whom Pushkin devoted his best poem “I remember the magic moment…”. The specialists and the critics say that this poem is the masterpiece of the lyrical poetry no-one was ever able to create.

Examples of traditional Russian wooden as well as Neoclassical styles of architecture are found in Torzhok. These include the wooden Voznesenia (Ascension) Church (17th century), and the Excursion Palace and the Spaso-Preobrazhenskiy Cathedral from the 18th and 19th centuries, respectively. Of note is the Boris and Gleb Monastery complex built in the 18th- and 19th-century Neoclassical style.
