Old Russian towns |
Description | |
By N.M.Karamzin"s version, the city was founded at the end of the XIV - the beginning of XV century by Prince Vladimir Andreevich the Brave who named it Yaroslavets in honour of his son Jaroslav.
The official date of the foundation of Maloyaroslavets is considered to be 1402.
In 1485 the town was annexed to the Moscow princedom and started being called Yaroslavets Small (as opposed to Yaroslavl on the Volga, and Yaroslav in Galich region).
In 1776 the town of Jaroslavets Small was enlisted in Kaluga province and became district town of Maloyaroslavets. In 1777 Empress Ekaterina II confirmed its emblem. And in 1779 she authorized the new, "regular" plan of the town.
During Patriotic war of 1812 on the 12th of October near Maloyaroslavets there was a fierce battle between the Russians and the French army, trying to break to Kaluga where foodstuff storehouses were concentrated. On the 14th of October Napoleon, defeated, gave the order to recede to the ruined Smolensk road.
During the Great Patriotic war during the Moscow battle (1941-1942) there were fierce fights in the area of Maloyaroslavets. |
