Description | |
When I returned to teaching this past August, while catching up with my colleague Jill, she pulled a sack of exquisite stones from her bookbag. It turns out that she had been visiting her mother in New Brunswick over the summer, something else we have in common, and cleaning out the attic. She ran across this sack of stones her mother had gathered on the beach in Brazil many years ago on a trip with Jill's father. They were so pretty she had kept them all these years, but never having a real use for them, they had eventually been relegated to the attic. Jill told her mom, "I know exactly who will appreciate these and put them to good use!" I could have kissed her! So, Jill not being one to wear much jewelry, I made a couple of pieces for her daughters as keepsakes of their grandmother, and now I have these wonderful stones to create with. So unfolds the first story...
I've called this necklace In Spiritu, because it was inspired by a spirit outside myself. I merely provided the hands and the eyes to get the job done. As to the exact identity of the rough stones I am unsure, but willing to hazard an educated guess. Starting from the bottom of the necklace and working up my suggestions would be: fluorite, carnelian, chrysoprase, agate. The round stones are red zebra jasper. The necklace measures 30 inches in length and features large stones wire wrapped in copper and hand formed and hammered copper links. The necklace closes with a hammered copper toggle clasp. |
