| Description | |
Now the name of this small town on both Volga's high banks is "Tutayev". It lies about 30 km up the river from Yaroslavl . This name sounds as an old one, but it isn't, and town's citizens know the remarkable history of town's re-names.
Before the period of soviet's power it was Romanov-Borisoglebsk town; then it was renamed to contemporary "Tutayev" after one of active bolsheviks of Russian 1917 revolution born here.
First, it was Romanov town (left bank), founded at XIV century by Roman Vasiljevitch, prince of Uglitch. Romanov town delivered to the Russian Tsar's court fish from Volga and furriers from forests and also sheepskins, the well-known in Russia Romanov's fur coats.
Borisoglebsk town (right bank, opposite to Romanov's side), first populated at begin of XV century, was named after two sainted man of Russian Christian Church - princes Boris and Gleb and was most known as spiritual center of Russian Christian Church.
1822 the two towns joined under the name "Romanovo-Borisoglebsk"; then, about 100 years later, the town was renamed to "Tutayev". Streets of Tutayev have also two or three names: one comes from the pre-revolution history, second maybe given after the revolution, and then, after changing of authority's preferences of soviet's power, third and fourth name maybe given. Now you can see full column of name-plates on any houses on street's corners.
Contemporary Tutayev town includes new part with multistage houses and old part consisting of wooden houses and old beautiful churches. Some of them are now repaired. I don't like this new parts of old towns with box-like multistage houses: I see enough such boxes around my home in new district of Moscow. I enjoy and photograph old houses and churches, built for human's life, not for survival.
