Each of my painting in this series has background and depth. For example, the painting "Charro Riders" is a depiction of their society:
The Charro, an upper-class horseman, represents one of two equestrian traditions that developed in New Spain (colonial Mexico). The Charro tradition perpetuates the upper-class equestrian heritage of the Spanish gentleman rider or caballero. The first Charros were the Spanish elite who were rewarded with Encomiendas, royal grants of Indian labor bestowed upon the conquistadors and court favorites. These hacendados, or gentleman ranchers, became New Spain's landed elite. The charro tradition retained jinetea, a short-stirrup riding style earlier adopted by Spanish riders from the Spanish Moors. The style evolved as a military tactic. By riding with short stirrups, cavalrymen could stand high above an enemy and slash downward with sword or lance. This riding style joined the earlier la brida school of long stirrups and stiff posture (Heavily armored knights developed la brida during the medieval era.)
That is but one example of the history and depth depicted in my scenes which illustrate and capture some of the many North American horse traditions and the people who live and love them.
This painting is currently framed by a heavy custom-made oak barnwood frame. This frame has been handcrafted by a cabinet maker who makes spectacular frames for my horse pieces. I have an image of the painting and frame together. email for more information. |
